Signs Redux: Everything's Better With Bacon

'Cause it's true - everything's better with bacon.  I'd even pay extra for it.

More Model Madness

Image
So, last week I posted about people making super exact  replicas of movie props  and stuff and then I saw this picture of a different kind of obsessed fan.  Lori should love this: Yeah, a guy made six Lombardi trophies for his Steeler man cave... Really?  And he lives in Florida... Oh,  here's the link...

A cold meat loaf sandwich?  Meat loaf with a hole in the middle?  Or maybe something like this?

Bonker's World Bonus

Saw this the other day on  Bonker's World  and, well, so true:

Artists and Craftsmen...uh Craftspeople

I've been thinking about this for a while.  Yeah, it'll be a bit of a geek post. Sorry. Or not, your choice. Oh, and it's long.  If you're like REALLY impatient and just want to get to my stunning conclusion, go to the text at the end that is THIS COLOR :). So I was perusing some websites* where people try to make EXACT replicas of the models used in the Star Wars movies (don't worry, this isn't really about the movies).  Like, to the tune of paying $400 to find an out of production  model kit  to get the transmission halves that were used on the Millennium Falcon (yeah, building one of those bad boys in scale could cost you thousands).  So there are websites dedicated to identifying the exact kit parts so these guys** can replicate as exactly as possible these models seen in these movies***. Some examples: to scale, as used in the 89 film... Empire Strikes Back - exact replica of the Probe Droid Pod (every detail) from the Studio Scal

Cover Songs and Exact Copies

Image
From Morguefile Seth Godin said something  the other day  about digitizing, about perfect copies - about a Japanese Beatles cover band that perfectly mimics the "fab four" note for note, word for word, nuance for nuance.  And he says he saw them perform - they were flawless...and he doesn't want to see them again.  Why would he?  It's a digital copy... I have the "new"  Journey   album* with the lead singer who  sounds a lot like   Steve Perry (they released it with a bonus disc of like 15 "cover" songs with this guy - Arnel, I think his name is, singing lead - he does the note for note cover of SP's vocal pretty well - like 90% or better I'd say on those recordings...it's hard to tell  the difference on a casual listening...).  And the novelty wore off... So one of the things I enjoyed about the  Needtobreathe  show we went to a few months back was  Ben Rector's  performance of Whitney Houston's  I Wanna Dance With Some

Baby Blues - The Dad Truth

Saw this today as I was going through my Monday Routine (albeit about 6 hours late).  The truth about being a dad: Click to Embiggen :)

Did This REALLY Happen?

I just put  Jakob the Liar * back on the shelf in my  DVD   Collection .  Rachel wanted to watch a movie with me the other day and she said, "Well, I want to watch something from your shelves, but I don't know if it'll be appropriate."  She poked at a couple and I'd say, "No, that's rated R" or "That's science fiction" and she'd move on.  She asked about Jakob the Liar  and I said, "Yes, I think you can watch that."  So we did. It's not Robin Williams' best movie - not even his best drama.  Nor is it the best holocaust movie - not by a long mile.  But Rachel is eleven and while she's been introduced to a lot of this stuff as historical fact, she doesn't really know the "story" of things like the holocaust.  As we were watching Rachel kept asking questions.  Why do the Jewish people live in such nice houses?  (Well, these were some of their homes before the war - but notice that there's a l

Heh - found these somewhere online - had to repost.  :)

So Much To Do...

Image
I sooooo want to do some of these.  I've always wanted to do number 6, or some variation, like stopping a random person and say something like, "What is the date?" and when they tell me, demand, "The YEAR? I need to know the YEAR?!" and when they tell me, run off yelling something like, "Missed by a decade!!" Okay, I'd probably never really do that.  But I think it would be funny.  Kinda...  You know, in a nerdy, weird sorta way... I REALLY like #2 and #9...heh...

What I Did Last Week...

Image
Here's a link to the worst of the services we played last week: opening worship... sigh...  They didn't post the best stuff we played (prelude songs).  We play the "offering" at about 20 min in and then we play during communion at about an hour in and we closed out the service at an hour and 19 minutes...  Wow - it's a bit harsh hearing the mix direct (that is without the room's natural reverb).  In the Postlude you can hear me mess up "God You Reign"...sigh...  Oh well.. The second  third night, we played a bit better - we had several "short" sets  through the day(s) as well to call the sessions back to order (and another worship service), etc, so we were able to get our monitor mixes more to our liking.  Still, lots of mistakes - but that's who we are...  It's hard listening to this without the "room" but it's a pretty decent mix.  Stuff we need to work on is obvious though.  At a little past 36 minutes Rev. Leaving for Conference

Image
Us last year - in the background, behind the people being ordained. Wednesday*, about noon (or so), we are leaving for  Annual Conference  - the annual gathering of pastors and laity in Western PA of the United Methodist Church.  Our worship team is again leading the music part of worship for the four day event.  It's a huge deal - in size as well as in responsibility ** - but I'm really looking forward to it. That being said, I'll probably be pretty light posting the rest of the week (if I get to post at all - it's been CRAZY busy trying to get ready to leave for conference...) *heh, today - I'm posting this after midnight - just packed of course! **Like 2,000 people or so - so, it's big in size - and we're playing something like 32 different songs in, if I counted correctly, 65 slots over the 4 days - well, from Thurs noon til Sunday noonish, so it's really about three days, on four different days...well, you know what I mean...

Ouch!!!!

Thrifty DVDs...

Image
From Morguefile Based on my last post, I thought an explanation might be in order.  We DO have a lot of DVDs - but we've been collecting them since DVD players first came out (Lori bought me one the first or second year they were widely available).  I don't have any idea how many DVDs we have - I don't really want to count them...suffice it to say it's...many. But here's the thing.  The kid DVDs have mostly been gifts.  I think over the past ten years or so we've bought maybe 25 or 30 or so DVDs at full price, most of those VeggieTales - just about all the rest have been gifts (we have nearly every Disney DVD ever made, for example, because a relative has made it her mission to buy 'em as they put them out). My DVDs were almost all purchased by me, however - a lot of Sci-Fi and Action.  Some I've paid full price for, like the Star Wars Blu Ray and the Indiana Jones movies and the Terry Pratchett stuff, but tons of them are from Walmart's $5 b
