A Proverb a Day: 1
Here's the beginning of a new series for my own benefit. Join in if you like. A Proverb a day (will it keep the doctor away?). I'll be trying to go sequentially through the book of Proverbs - though I can't really promise that I'll hit one a day...if I really keep up with this I might create yet another blog for it...heh...probably not, though...
My child, if sinners entice you,
do not consent. (Proverbs 1:10)
Chapter one of Proverbs has a couple of long sections that can, rightfully, be called proverbs. The first is 10-19 and it's all about staying away from sin.
It makes perfect sense, as I've pulled it out of context, doesn't it? I mean, don't associate with sinners. After all, they're, um, sinners...and I'm, um, not?
Actually, the whole thing is about not giving in to temptation. Verse 15:
my child, do not walk in their way,
keep your foot from their paths;
Don't DO what sinners do. But how do you even hear their voices if you aren't anywhere near the "sinners" (and here I guess I mean the "unredeemed" - I mean, we've all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God...).
The point is to not let yourself be pulled into sin. No matter how great the temptation, do not let yourself be pulled in to sin...
I was thinking yesterday about this when I was writing on the Talk About... blog (http://www.talkaboutsomething.blogspot.com//). There's this porn shop in Brookville and there's a big billboard out front that someone has put up that basically says porn is sin and bad for you... And I'm okay with that. BUT, I'm wondering if anybody has talked to the owner of the store... And in thinking about THAT... How would I talk to him (if I lived in Brookville, that is)? I mean, would I go into the store (heh, the blue haired old ladies would love to hear about THAT, wouldn't they...). I don't really care what people would mistakenly think about such an action, I'm more worried about what I might find in there. I'm a guy, I'm susceptable to the same kind of temptations that other guys are... So, I know that I wouldn't go into the store, not because of what others might think, but because of what I might think. So what would I do? So as to not ge"consent" as the Proverb-er writes (heh), I would just let this guy go to hell...
Can I live with that? (No, I'm not trying to justify my new "Porn Shop Ministry" or anything - but now I really AM worried about the owner...and I'm praying for him/her/them...and there isn't anything else I can do right now...)
Working out my salvation with fear and trembling...
