Buzzword Bingo

Everybody has buzzwords - business has theirs, the entertainment industry has a lingo, in sports, and in church work we have ours, too. Dilbert the other day had the pointy haired boss try to lead via catchprhases: copyright Scott Adams I have threatened to make up "Buzzword Bingo" cards for Annual Conference. You know, put words like "Holy Conferencing" and "Inclusiveness" and "Core Value" and, oh yeah, "Jesus" on the card and when you get five in a row you can jump up and yell "BINGO", or maybe "Holy Spirit" I don't know... We're not allowed to play bingo, so we definitely shouldn't yell out that word. Maybe if I had people yell out "Hallelujah!" when they got 5 in a row, the powers that be at conference would just assume that the person was powerfully moved by the point being made.* But we would know - and would secretly give them a prize.** The point being that we like to use the t...

Calendars

From Morguefile A mistake was made, a date was published in error and I said, "No problem, we'll just say you're using..." and I couldn't think of what calendar we use.  I thought it was the Julian calendar, so what would an alternative be? The Mayan?  Nah, the published date was just one day off.  Plus, it's too easy a target (calendar jokes are coming, I promise :) ) Google it. So we use the  Gregorian Calendar . Oh, yeah, that's right.*  Replaced the Julian calendar. Then that led me to  this link  about why the year 2100 won't be a leap year and how the Gregorian calendar makes adjustments because it takes a little more than 365 days for the earth to circle the sun - so we gain days if we just have a 365 day calendar - but not perfectly - so we need leap years - one every four years - UNLESS the year is divisible by 100 - UNLESS that year is also divisible by 400 UNLESS (and this one hasn't been put into practice - yet - but we'll...

Jesus Got MAD...

No, this isn't about the cleansing of the Temple.  Yes Jesus got really mad that day, but this is another time.  I'm reading the Gospel of Mark today and I come across this verse in Chapter 3: He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored. So the religious leaders want to trap Jesus and there's this guy with a "shriveled hand" in the synagogue and Mark says they're watching Jesus closely to see if he'll heal on the Sabbath.  Do you think about Jesus getting angry?  I guess I don't.  Too many images of the Jedi-Jesus - you know, no emotions, always calm and cool and spouting wisdom. But here it's almost like he's baiting them.  Doing what he KNOWS will upset them...because he's upset.  But here's the thing - he's mad for all the right reasons.  "...deeply distressed at their s...
